‘Furious 7’ wins third weekend at box office

TORONTO — Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 wasn’t able to take down Furious 7, which topped the box office for the third consecutive weekend.

Furious 7 earned $29 million at cinemas in the U.S. and Canada, bringing its worldwide total to nearly $1.2 billion.

Kevin James’ comedy sequel debuted to $24 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. That’s down from the $31.8 million the original Paul Blart: Mall Cop made in its opening weekend in 2009.

The low-budget thriller Unfriended opened in third place with $16 million.

Disney’s Monkey Kingdom earned $4.7 million in its opening weekend, placing seventh behind Home ($10.3 million), The Longest Ride ($6.8 million) and Get Hard ($4.8 million).

The rest of the top 10 consists of Woman in Gold ($4.6 million), The Divergent Series: Insurgent ($4.1 million) and Cinderella ($3.8 million). The latter has earned an impressive $458 million worldwide.
