Police find woman sought in connection with weekend murder

WATCH ABOVE: An investigation into a suspicious death led police to a northeast hotel on Monday. Sarah Offin reports.

CALGARY – Police have found a woman who is a friend of the victim and may have information in connection with Calgary’s eighth murder of 2015.

Police were called to the 10300 block of Macleod Trail S.W. around 8 a.m. Saturday for a man in medical distress. They found a man believed to be in his 40s lying in a parking lot. He was declared dead at the scene and has been identified as Rodney Conway, 44, of Calgary.

Police detained three men considered persons of interest in the case at a Travelodge in the 2750 block of Sunridge Blvd. N.E. at around 11 a.m. on Monday. Investigators first arrived at the hotel at around 10 p.m. on Sunday evening, but say one man wasn’t willing to speak with them.

Detectives stood guard outside the man’s room for over 12 hours until they were able obtain a warrant. That man–and the other two–have since been released.

Police found a 20-year-old friend of the victim who may have information that could help the investigation after releasing her photograph Monday afternoon.

Anyone with additional information related to the case is asked to call the Homicide Unit Tip Line at 403-428-8877, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477, www.calgarycrimestoppers.org or text tttTIPS to 274637.

One man who was staying on the fourth floor of the hotel on Monday tell Global News investigators woke him up early in the morning.

“We heard a very loud knocking, and we were kind of disturbed because it’s two o’clock in the morning and you always suspect the worst at that time,” said hotel guest Nathan Rogers. “The police didn’t tell us what they were looking for, they just made sure we were registered guests.”
