Northeast hit and run leaves woman fighting for her life

CALGARY – A possible parking dispute in the city’s northeast has left a woman in serious condition after she was struck and pinned underneath a vehicle. Staff Sergeant Paul Stacy said she will undergo surgery on Monday.

The driver fled the scene on foot after hitting the woman. Police are now asking for the public’s help to track the suspect down.

Emergency crews were called to the 200 block of Saddletowne Circle just after 12 p.m. on Sunday.

EMS says a female driver got out of her vehicle and was then struck and pinned against her vehicle by another vehicle.

The suspect’s vehicle then ran over the woman and the driver allegedly ran off, leaving her vehicle at the scene.

The 34-year-old victim was taken to hospital in potentially life-threatening condition. EMS says the collision happened at a low speed, but the injuries were traumatic.

Police tape cordoned off the parking lot as investigators searched the two vehicles.

Business owners say the victim was driving a Mercedes, and got out of her car after it was struck by a Jeep.

That’s when she was hit by the second vehicle.

“When she came out of that car she said, ‘What are you doing?’ and he moved forward and reversed it back again and got her sandwiched in between her car and his car,” Syed Mohyuddin said.

“I’m pretty shocked,” Suki Ghotra said. “When I came around, I saw this girl was horizontal in the air, stuck between the cars.”

People nearby rushed in to lift the Jeep off of her.

“She was trapped underneath the front right wheel of the SUV. Police and a number of bystanders went and actually raised the front of the vehicle so they could drag her out,” Sergeant Colin Foster said.

“Although it was a relatively low-speed collision, it was still a very high mechanism incident involving quite significant injury,” Stuart Brideaux from EMS said.

The driver of the jeep, an 18-year-old man, fled the area.

“At the moment, we believe we know who this person may be, so we are making inquires with the registered owner of the vehicle,” Sgt. Foster said.

Employees have identified the victim as the owner of the Dollar and Gift Bazzar nearby.

Others say she’s a new mom.

“She had a baby a couple of months ago. She was young, you know. I hope she’s going to survive,” Mohyuddin said.

A passenger in her vehicle was not injured.
