WHITBY, Ont. – The head of a public school board east of Toronto says talks with high school teachers will continue through the weekend, but schools will be closed if the union declares a strike.
The Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation has threatened to withdraw services at seven school boards, starting with Durham District School Board.
Michael Barrett, chair of the board, says he is optimistic both sides can hammer out a deal over the weekend, but if not, high schools will have to close.
He says the board is working with local community services to ensure the needs of students with the most significant special needs can still be met, but without teachers there would not be enough supervision to keep schools open.
Barrett says the board is working with the provincial government to ensure its transmission of marks to universities and colleges can be done by the deadline of the end of today.
Parents can stay informed throughout the weekend by checking the board’s website, Facebook page or Twitter feed.
