Former Salmon Arm student returns to talk about homophobia

ARMSTRONG – Ten years ago he graduated high school in Salmon Arm, Ryan Clayton was back in his old school district on Thursday sharing his story with another crop of students. Clayton was at Pleasant Valley Secondary School sharing his experience growing up gay in a small town, talking to kids about homophobia and discrimination.

“I like to dispel a lot of the myths and misinformation that is out there about the gay and lesbian community,” says Clayton, who speaks throughout the province on issues of homophobia and transphobia in school .

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Today the students had ready answers to many of Clayton’s questions about stereotypes and labels. He’s been working in this school district for eight years, and believes he may be starting to see the impacts.

“I’m seeing the returns on that,” says Clayton. “I think we may be reaching a point one day where I may have worked my way out of a job [because] the communities [are] becoming much more open and supportive. I might not be necessary fairly soon, which is a good feeling.”
