RCMP seek suspect after suspicious package forces evacuation of Kelowna mall

KELOWNA – Kelowna RCMP are looking for a suspect after a suspicious package was left at the Orchard Park Mall.

A Sears employee found the package, which was on fire, Wednesday afternoon and immediately contacted mall security and police.

The entire shopping mall was evacuated and closed for the remainder of the day while the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit was called in.

“The suspicious package was examined and destroyed. An extensive search of Sears as well as a careful examination of the entire mall was conducted and no other devices were located,” says Cpl. Joe Duncan in a news release.

The nylon, lunch-box sized package did not contain any explosives.

Investigators are now trying to identify a man photographed by security cameras.
