Alcohol likely behind pedestrian CTrain collision: Calgary Police

CALGARY- A man was transported to hospital in life threatening condition late Wednesday night after he was struck by a CTrain.

The man in his 40s was hit by a northbound train just before 8:00 p.m. at 2nd Street and 58th Avenue S.E. Police say the man was thrown 15 metres into the intersection; emergency crews had to pull him out from under the train.

Witnesses say the man ignored all warning signs and walked right into the path of the oncoming train. Police believe he may have been drinking at the time.

“The evidence at the scene thus far would give us reason to believe the subject that wondered into the rail crossing may have been intoxicated,” says duty inspector Darren Leggatt. “Our traffic section is going to continue to investigate.”

Train service was temporarily suspended until approximately 10:00 p.m. Calgary Transit was on hand to assist the driver who was shaken up by the incident.
