WINNIPEG — Are you dreading spring cleaning at your place? Imagine the task facing city crews tackling the annual spring cleanup of streets, sidewalks and back lanes.

The $4.5-million operation, which started Sunday night, involves more than 200 pieces of equipment and about 500 staff. It’s expected to take five weeks to finish the cleanup.

Crews will initially focus on the downtown area, regional streets, bridges and overpasses. Sidewalks on main routes, bus routes and collector streets will also be targeted first.

City crews clean up more than 45,000 tonnes of debris that accumulated over the winter months, officials say.

Next week crews will start cleaning parks and boulevards along major routes. Residential cleanup will focus on areas where excessive sand has accumulated.
