MONTREAL — Montreal firefighters managed to contain a general alarm fire on the corner of Laval Avenue and Roy Street in the Plateau Mont-Royal by about 4 p.m. Monday afternoon.

More than 125 firefighters and numerous vehicles were called to the scene.

The building housed commercial operations on the ground floor and at least eight apartments on the second and third floor.

Everyone inside was evacuated safely. No one was injured.

The fire department said it believes the flames began on the third floor, before spreading to the roof and then throughout the building.

Firefighters tried to enter the burning building but were forced to retreat because of the heavy smoke.

The fire department then concentrated on preventing the fire from spreading to neighbouring buildings.

Laval and Roy streets are expected to remain closed to traffic until early evening.
