MONTREAL – At around 10:30 this morning, Jason Hughes was walking along the Lachine Canal in Griffintown, when he says an off-leash dog jumped onto the icy canal and fell through the ice.
The dog’s owner quickly jumped into the frigid waters after him.
Hughes who witnessed the ordeal called 9-1-1.
According to Hughes who stayed on the scene, police were quick to respond to the incident.

When they arrived on location, the unidentified man had managed to pull himself and his dog onto a slab of ice midway across the canal.
Unable to reach the pair without specialized equipment, firefighters were called in.
Using an inflatable dinghy they were able to save the two.
The man who was out on the ice for approximately 20 minutes was treated in hospital for light hypothermia.
