EDMONTON – An Edmonton community league has won a dispute over the redevelopment of a church.

On Friday morning, the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board issued its decision in favour of the Alberta Avenue Community League to stop the rebuild of the Salvation Army’s Crossroads Community Church.

“Well, I’m pleased with the decision. I think that they made the right decision. They made the only correct legal decision that they could’ve made,” said Cris Basualdo, Alberta Avenue Community League.

“I’m also pleased at the relief that I know a lot of neighbours of the proposed development will feel of this.”

The plans had been on the table for the past two years to rebuild on land at 116 Avenue and 95 Street where a boarded up church currently sits.

The community league expressed concern the proposal was more than a place of religious assembly, which would have negative impact.

The Salvation Army has described itself as a church with an acute social conscience, with a mandate to help the disadvantaged.

A nearby church has been home for Crossroads, but it’s only designed to be temporary.

Friday’s decision was verbal. A written decision explaining the reasons is expected later in April.
