CALGARY – Five people were rushed to hospital on Friday after a carbon monoxide leak in a southwest townhouse complex.

Emergency crews were called to the 0-100 block of Coachway Gardens S.W. around 4:30 a.m. by a teenage boy who reported feeling ill and finding his mom and sister unresponsive in his home.

The young boy lost consciousness while on the phone to emergency responders.

Firefighters who arrived at the scene had to force their way into the boy’s unit; inside they found three people unconscious.

EMS say the teenage caller was taken to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in stable condition, while his mother and teenage sister were taken to the Foothills hospital in serious but stable condition. All three were suffering from elevated CO levels.

Emergency crews checked two adjacent units in the complex.

One was unoccupied as it was under construction, but the second unit had a family of four living inside.

The residents were conscious and assessed by EMS.

Two of the four people, a two-year-old girl and a nine-month-old boy, were taken to the Alberta Children’s hospital in stable, non-life-threatening condition with slight CO exposure.

The children’s father tells Global News he is thankful for the Calgary Fire Department.

“Everything is okay. Me, my wife, my two kids. Everything is okay,” said Abdo Aboumourad. “We’re just thankful everything was good.”

Aboumourad confirmed their unit didn’t have a carbon monoxide detector, but says he plans to buy one imminently.
