EDMONTON — Tired of all the dust, dirt and sand piled up on city streets? Well, there’s good news. Edmonton street sweeping crews are hitting the roads Monday morning.

The City says it’s getting a head-start on residential street cleaning this spring, compared to past years.

“With the higher temperatures last month, snow and ice melted and we were able to get some sweeping done on major roads over the last several weeks,” said Roland Aitchison, superintendant of operations with Roadway Maintenance. “Now that the snow and ice is mainly gone from gutters and boulevards in residential areas, we have launched a full-scale street cleaning campaign.”

Cleaning up Edmonton’s 4,700 kilometres of major roads, residential streets, alleyways and boulevards will take six to nine weeks, the city said Thursday.

Between 150,000 and 180,000 tonnes of material are used to sand Edmonton’s roads each winter. Eighty per cent of the sand collected during spring clean-up is reused.

Signs will be set up to alert residents before street cleaning crews visit their area. The city asks drivers to remove their vehicles from the curbside wherever possible.

An interactive street sweeping schedule is available online. To find out when crews will be in your area, head to the City of Edmonton’s website.
