DDO residents worry about recent rash of car break-ins

DOLLARD-DES-ORMEAUX – 45-year-old Robert Wiseman grew up in Dollard-des-Ormeaux (DDO), and he says for the first time he worries for his safety.

Over the last three months, his family’s vehicles have been broken into three times.

In one incident, thieves took his remote garage door opener and they actually used it, Weiseman says, to open the door in the middle of the night.

“I don’t know if somebody’s watching us,” he says.

“I know it’s been happening across DDO. We seem to be the target of some people.”

Several other area residents told Global News they too have been victimized in recent weeks.

Gerry Lauzon from the DDO Patrol Service says he’s not aware of anything out of the ordinary in the West Island community.

“We’re the safest police station on the island of Montreal,” says Lauzon.

Lauzon says his team of patrollers are on-call, and on the road 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

He says victims of car thefts should call his group and file official reports.

With summer approaching, he also reminds DDO residents about a special service his organization offers homeowners.

“When people leave home for an extended period of time, they can call us and give us information, and we’ll keep an eye on their home when they’re gone,” Lauzon adds.

Montreal Police arrested three people last week in Pierrefonds.

One of the suspects is facing a charge of stealing items from a vehicle.

Despite the arrests, one DDO resident told Global News his car was targeted by thieves a few days ago.
