Lethbridge man returns to his roots to share career success

LETHBRIDGE- Born and raised in Lethbridge, Derek Scott has always seen himself in the spotlight. Now he has turned his vision of performing on a big stage into reality.

“When I was on Broadway I would think, ‘Gosh, I’m an actor from Lethbridge, I did a work shop at my high school years and years ago,’ and there is something really nice about coming back to your roots,” adds Scott.

That’s exactly what has drawn Scott to return to Lethbridge. He’s hosting a workshop at CASA on Saturday, giving back to the community that has supported him throughout his career.

“A lot of people would see me as a Shakespearean actor or they see me as a clown, or they see me as physical comedian or they see me as an actor or they would see me as a magician or they would see me as a director and so they would want me to do a workshop so I developed a workshop that is really good for all kinds of people. It’s a performance workshop, it deals with rhythms.”

Scott has literally spent his career clowning around. Working on stage as a clown for productions like Cirque de Soleil. He has starred and worked behind the scenes of Just For Laughs, worked in London’s West End and taken stage for the Stratford Shakespearean Festival in Ontario. But no matter where he works, he always remembers his home town.

“I don’t think it matters where you grow up, hockey players come from here, actors come from here, computer programmers come from here, Lethbridge is a great place to grow up and there is opportunity here.”

Scott says he looks forward to meeting new Lethbridge talent, waiting for the day when they too, take the big stage.
