Residents of the Beckley Club Estates neighbourhood in Dallas, Texas, consider the wild peacocks that have roamed the area for years to be an essential part of what makes their community special.
“They’re a part of this neighbourhood,” resident Lisa Solis told NBC. “We love them very much.”
That’s why neighbours were shocked to find out that one of the birds was stolen while it was mating.
Security cameras on Solis’ home captured the incident.
“People are angry, I guess, because it’s shocking to see,” said Solis.
In the security footage, a man walks up to the unsuspecting peacock and grabs it by its claws.
Neighbour Tisha Crear witnessed the man driving away with the peacock in his car.
“I see one of the peacocks, the oldest male peacock – the one with the long, beautiful feathers – in the car,” said Crear. “And the guy slams the door and half of the feathers are hanging out of the door.”
Crear shouted at the man and tried to stop him, but he drove away with his loot.
Concerned residents have contacted the police and are hoping that the beautifully plumed resident will be returned.
