Fire at medicinal grow-op in Chilliwack is not suspicious

The fire at the barn on Monday morning. Kevin A MacDonald

VANCOUVER – Firefighters in Chilliwack spent much of the morning battling a large barn fire.

Crews were called to the building just off Yale Road around 9 a.m. The fire sent a plume of thick, black smoke into the sky.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The cause is still under investigation but Chilliwack Fire Department has confirmed the barn housed a legal medicinal marijuana grow-op that was under renovation.

Our Global News cameraman was asked to leave the area, but RCMP did confirm the call came in to dispatch as a grow-op fire.

The cause of the fire is not considered suspicious. The fire was contained to one building, but that building has been destroyed.

B.C. has nearly 14,000 medicinal marijuana grow-ops across the province.
