A Fairy Godmother makes youth’s dreams come true for their prom night

TORONTO – Ethel Scullion is making dreams come true for youth by helping them find their special outfit for prom night or graduation.

This past January, Ethel and her daughter Rachel started collecting donated formal attire, including dresses, suits, jewelry, and shoes from donors in Durham region.

“Fairy Godmother’s Closet is support for students that may need a little extra assistance to get to their prom or grad,” said Scullion, dounder of Fairy Godmother’s Closet. “I learned through my own experiences from my own situation with my daughter that the grad and the prom are very expensive and stressful on families.”

Fairy Godmother’s Closet started with only seven dresses, and now have over 250 dresses and roughly 40 suits.

Danielle Howard was in need of a prom dress, and with the help of Scullion, she was able to find the perfect dress.

“It felt amazing. Ethel made me feel really special,” said Howard. “I felt like Cinderella.”

All donations of dresses and suits are professionally cleaned and free to borrow for Grade 8 and Grade 12 students living in the Durham region.

Sylvia Phillips has donated a few items to the Fairy Godmother’s Closet and said it’s a “fabulous thing that they’re doing.” ”

“There’s a lot of people who don’t have the opportunity or don’t have the money to be able to purchase all the things necessary to go to their grad or prom,” said Philips. “She’s reaching out to a lot of people that can now, feel very special on that day.”
