Hatfield Farms annual Easter egg hunt draws in hundreds

HALIFAX – A ride into the woods on a horse drawn sleigh isn’t the way most Maritimers would think to spend Easter. However hundreds of people have made a visit to Hatfield Farms in Hammonds Plains, N.S. a special part of their Easter celebrations for years.

“Less snow last year, but we’re going to have just as much fun this year,” said Moe Doucet, who is at the farm for the second year in a row with his two children.

Hatfield Farms has hosted their annual Easter Egg Hunt for the past ten years.

“We came here because we wanted to go on an Easter egg hunt and we thought it would be a whole lot funner with animals around,” said Kate Wolf.

Some people who came to Hatfield Farms today have been to the Easter Egg Hunt before, but for others, this is a new experience.

“This is our first time celebrating Easter now that she’s starting to understand it a little bit more and she loves Hatfield Farms. She loves the animals, so it’s perfect way to spend Easter Sunday outside,” Jill Campbell said while holding her two-year-old daughter Madelyn.

The event keeps growing each and every year, and now includes an indoor play area for kids and even mechanical bull rides.

“Nothing we’ve ever done before so, it’s kind of exciting,” said Aiden Robley, a Grade 6 student.

“I’m really excited. I had a lot of fun on the horses today,” added his sister, Grade 4 student Rachel Robley.

The Easter bunny himself made a grand entrance to the egg hunt, but most kids were looking forward to one thing and one thing only: eggs. The snow and ice made it a little more challenging for the farm to hide the Easter eggs, but there were lots of them up for grabs.

“The first year we did 5,000, then 6,000, then 10,000 eggs. This year, we’re up to 14,000 eggs,” said Brian Hatfield, owner of Hatfield Farms.

“Every year it grows. It’s a great event.”

In total, 500 people came out to the Easter egg Hunt on Sunday.
