MONTREAL – The man charged in Quebec’s 2012 election-night shooting will go on trial in September.
Richard Henry Bain’s trial on first-degree murder and other charges is expected to last between six and eight weeks.
Quebec Superior Court Justice Guy Cournoyer set the Sept. 8 date today as lawyers continue to work through various issues.
One of them is whether Bain will have legal representation when the trial begins.
A hearing involving potential defence lawyer Alan Guttman and the Quebec government has been set for April to look at the issue of compensation.
Bain is charged in the slaying of lighting technician Denis Blanchette outside a Montreal nightclub in September 2012 as then-Parti Quebecois leader Pauline Marois was toasting her party’s election win.
He also faces two counts of attempted murder and several weapons-related charges.
