WATCH: A Metro Vancouver boy is an international yo-yo superstar. Linda Alesworth introduces us to Harrison Lee, the 15 year old who is turning his “ups and downs” into a healthy career.
“I have a yo-yo in my pocket every day.”
So says Harrison Lee, a 15-year-old wunderkind from Burnaby who has won numerous international awards for his yo-yo skills.
“When I’m on stage I kind of zone out and let my hands take over,” he says.
Lee became known for his amazing abilities years ago, but his fame has only continued to grow. He now has his own trading card – “It’s really awesome. It’s like my own business card,” he says – and recently designed his own yo-yo that is going on sale.
“There’s lots of physics in yo-yo design. There’s moment of inertia, angular momentum, so many physics,” he says.
He calls it The Orca, and it costs $130.
“It kind of makes it the supreme yo-yo. It has all the best features,” says Lee.
As for future plans? He hopes to start his path to the world championships in Toyko with a win at the provincial championships in Burnaby this weekend. But at this point, he isn’t planning on making his special talent a lifelong career.
“I think yo-yo will open doors for me to do something else,” he says, adding he hopes his own product will teach him business skills that will prove valuable later on in life.
“This is just the starting point.”
