HALIFAX – NB Power and Nova Scotia Power are teaming up for a pilot project they say could save utility customers up to $20 million.

Beverley Ware, a spokeswoman for Nova Scotia Power (TSX:EMA), says the two companies have developed a system that allows either utility to purchase power from the cheapest and most efficient sources produced by their plants.

Ware says the two companies already have an agreement that allows either one to purchase and transmit power across provincial borders.

The companies say they started testing the new system in January and plan to run it for a year.

Ware says Nova Scotia Power and NB Power will maintain their separate dispatch centres and no job losses are expected.
