Delta teenager Kyle McConkey who lost his very public battle with leukemia earlier this month will be laid to rest today.

Eighteen-year-old McConkey suffered from a rare form of leukemia for years and was told he had no options left here in Canada.

The family learned about a new type of treatment being tested at Seattle Children’s Hospital that could still save Kyle’s life, but could not afford it.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

So an online fundraising campaign was launched to help Kyle’s family raise the money.

More than $280,000 were raised, and Global BC viewers have come through in a big way with their generosity for Kyle’s family.

Kyle was supposed to start the experimental treatment in December, but an infection kept him bedridden over the Christmas season.

He was hoping to attempt the treatment again this month, but on March 19, McConkey passed away from a viral infection.

The family says the donated funds will be used to assist other families affected by Kyle’s disease.

His funeral will be held at South Delta Baptist Church at 2 p.m. today. Members of the public are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to Michael Cuccione Foundation.
