OTTAWA – Global News has learned the British foreign minister will be in Toronto Friday to meet Foreign Affairs Minister Rob Nicholson to discuss the issues of homegrown terrorism and the mission against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

A government source says British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond and Nicholson will discuss how to stop foreign fighters, including Westerners who travel overseas to fight for ISIS.

Britain is also part of the United States-led air campaign against ISIS – but they are only targeting sites in Iraq.

Canada is currently debating expanding the mission into Syria. The Conservative government wants to extend the bombing campaign against ISIS for one year, while the opposition NDP and Liberals oppose the plan and are asking for more humanitarian aid instead.

The government argues ISIS poses a significant threat to Canada’s national security, while critics say the mission is ill-defined.
