A middle-aged man has built a homemade submarine in a village of northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, after studying the technique on his own for decades.
Du Xiutang, 53, has been interested in military affairs since he was a boy, and started gathering information about how to build a submarine two decades ago when he read some news that Russia sold an obsolete submarine to China which inspired his patriotism.
“Since then, I started gathering materials about this field and studied on it,” said Du.
Du has won three national invention patents in techniques related with submarine-making, including the hydraulic drainage system. In February, 2014, his work attracted attention from a researcher of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, which has designed the well-known “Jiaolong” manned submersible.
They asked him to make a model first, and Du has finished the main body of the submarine now. But it still needs more electric equipment before putting it into water.
