TORONTO – Ohio police are seeking information related to a photo that emerged on Facebook Monday of what appears to be a cat strapped to the hood of a moving car.

Polly Vandall was driving in New Philadelphia on Sunday when she claims she saw something that immediately grabbed her attention.

“I looked over and glanced to my left and thought ‘Is that a cat on the hood?'” she told WKYC. “It was walking around and it was not happy to be on the hood. People around the car were staring at the cat — quite distracted.”

The images she captured show a feline on the hood of a vehicle with its leash caught in the wiper blades and a woman, the passenger, peering out her window and smiling.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The photos quickly went viral after Vandall shared them on social media.

But the obvious question as to why the cat wasn’t safe inside the vehicle may go unanswered.

At the time of this writing, officials have not received enough information to indentify the people in the gold Buick SUV. And the intersection where the image was captured does not have traffic cameras installed.

“I wish someone got a picture of the license plate. We could follow up very quickly,” Police Chief Michael Goodwin told NBC. “It’s a very bizarre case, unclear if it would violate any animal cruelty laws. It’s the public safety of main concern to me. I’ve never seen anything like it in 25 years on the job.”

Anyone with information is being asked to contact the New Philadelphia Police Department.
