REGINA – A proposed microbrewery in the Heritage neighborhood received full support from city council Monday evening.
Adam Smith of Malty National Brewery told council he and his business partner Kelsey Beach, want to encourage the craft beer industry in Regina by turning a commercial building near 15th Avenue and Montreal Street into a microbrewery.
Some concerns have been raised in the public consultation process and a resident was scheduled on the meeting’s agenda to express opposition to the business but failed to show up.
Smith told council the business would only serve coffee. That’s because the business will likely not be licensed to actually serve beer, but rather sell it to customers in a growler, or a refillable beer bottle.
The proposal received the go-ahead from the planning commission earlier this month, but needed approval to change the building’s zoning to include a brewery from city council.
City council voted unanimously in support of the brewery which is expected to be up and running by the summer.
