Highway 2 south of Calgary re-opens after several crashes, sending 20 to hospital

CALGARY – Highway 2 south of Calgary is open again after a series of crashes on Monday, sending 20 people to hospital.

Okotoks RCMP say Highway 2 northbound and south in the Okotoks area is open for travel, with slight delays.

One woman was transported to the Foothills Medical Centre in life-threatening condition.

Two adults are in serious, potentially life-threatening condition, also being taken to the Foothills Medical Centre.

Two children were transported to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in non life-threatening condition, with minor injures.

The remaining people taken to hospital were adults in non-life threatening condition with minor injuries.

They were transported to hospitals in Calgary and the surrounding area.

RCMP believe 20 to 30 vehicles were involved, and say the investigation is ongoing.

The initial cause of the collisions is not known at this time.

RCMP had closed Highway 2 in both directions between the Aldersyde and Okotoks overpasses.

Traffic was rerouted on to Highway 2A.

Police say the collisions involved several semis, and the roads are very icy.

Motorists are urged to drive with caution in these conditions.
