Speed and alcohol considered factors in fiery crash

CALGARY – Two people were seriously injured in a fiery collision involving an SUV and a Calgary Transit bus on Sunday.

It happened in the intersection of Macleod Trail S.W. and Southport Road S.W. around 8 p.m.

The SUV crashed into the bus before catching fire.

Firefighters extricated the driver of the SUV from inside the burning vehicle.

“One of the patients was trapped. Crews performed a rapid extrication of the patient while they were fighting the fire, pulled him to safety and then put the fire out,” said Acting Battalion Chief Paul LeBlanc.

EMS say the driver, a man in his 20’s, was then rushed to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.

A teenage passenger was also rushed to hospital in stable, non-life-threatening condition.

The bus driver suffered minor injuries.

The bus was empty at the time of the collision.

Investigators say speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the collision, and the SUV may have run a red light.

A CCTV camera on the bus captured the collision, and officers say it shows the bus had a green light at the time.
