Seasonal parking ban not expected following latest blast of snow

EDMONTON — It was a week ago last Friday that Edmonton broke a 105-year-old temperature record, hitting 14.5°C with sunny skies.

While the temperatures weren’t too chilly, Edmontonians woke up to a much different situation Sunday with plenty of fresh snow on the ground.

Upwards of 10 to 20 centimetres of snow has fallen in parts of the Capital Region since Thursday night.

About 90 pieces of snow removal equipment hit city streets Saturday night to begin the clean-up. They remained on the roads all day Sunday, with contract graders coming in overnight Sunday.

“The big focus for us right now is trying to get things ready for the Monday morning commute,” Bob Dunford, director of Roadway Maintenance with the City of Edmonton said Sunday.

While crews hoped to have all the main arterial roads cleared by early Monday morning, Dunford urges drivers to adjust to the snowy conditions.

“It is going to be winter driving conditions. It is still below the freezing mark so even though where we have plowed out and we’ve put material down, you do run into that chance of a little bit of ice,” he explained.

Temperatures reached 0°C Sunday, and a high of -1°C is expected on Monday. The temperatures will continue to climb throughout the week, hitting highs of 15°C Friday and 12°C for Saturday and Sunday.

“This snow will disappear faster than we could actually do the blading as opposed to say, in the middle of the winter season,” said Dunford, who will provide an update on Monday morning.
