REGINA – A café in Regina played host to diplomats from around the world Saturday, as they tried to deal with an alien invasion.

The scenario is all part of Canada’s first ever role-playing mega-game.

“A mega-game is basically something with a large number of players playing an open-ended, evolving game, with an overarching story,” said Ameya Bhandarkar, a volunteer with Sask Games.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

On Saturday at the Artful Dodger, the story revolved around a futuristic alien invasion from the years 2020 to 2022.

Mega-games have been played in the United Kingdom since the 1970s, but are just now gaining traction in North America.

“We were looking for more groups in Canada to get help from, and we realized nobody had done this before,” Bhandarkar said.

In this particular mega-game, players worked in teams of four or five, representing diplomats from various countries.

“At the start of each turn, the heads of state stay at their tables, and the other three go off to a science conference, to the world map to deploy units, and to the United Nations security council to discuss global issues,” Bhandarkar said.

About 60 participants took part, helping to raise money for Souls Harbour Rescue Mission.
