HALIFAX – After being pelted by snow all day long, Halifax residents, who were busy clearing their properties, hit the streets tonight while businesses had parking lots cleared for business on Thursday.

After being cooped up all day at home many Halifax residents got outside Wednesday evening for a walk or to go to the grocery store. People just can’t believe the amount of snow Halifax has received this winter.

“It reminds me of being in the Territories – wait – I’m not in the Territories,” said Kate Canavan, who has lived in the Territories where she said the snow starts in October.

One man just arrived in Halifax from New York City last night.

“I actually just moved in last night and just beat the storm and I was not anticipating Winter still being here,” said Chad Bierdeman.

Laura Greenwood, a Haligonian, said “I’ve lived here my whole life. It’s the worst winter I’ve ever seen and I can’t believe it.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“I just wish I had brought a sled. It would make it much quicker and a lot more fun anyways,” Bierdeman added.

There’s the sound of a front end loader lifting a bucket of snow and dumping it as the operator was the clearing the parking lot of the Westin Hotel. It was a tough job with cars occupying many of the parking spaces.

Meanwhile, across the street, a plow operator for Property Buddies Ltd. was clearing a business lot. The snow was light this morning C.J. Noddin said. “It’s not too bad. It’s powder snow, so it’s a lot easier to move. Thank God there was no rain or freeze that came right after it. That’s a big plus this storm.”

Noddin was on his second eight-hour shift of the day.

“I probably plowed about 25 to 30 centimeters off this lot earlier,” said Noddin, “and then by the time I got back here about an hour ago it had all blown back in, so we’re looking at 35 to 40 would be my guess.”

A bob cat was clearing an apartment complex on Spring Garden Road. Nearby Carlton Street had yet to see a plow by 7:00 P.M.

Four Dalhousie students were clearing steps and sidewalks on Carlton to earn some money. “We’ll make a couple of bucks off this. We’re just out doing a couple of houses here and around,” said Duane Davis. “We got another guy who kind of runs us around and supplies us with everything, so we’re trying to make it easy on people.”

Just a reminder to pedestrians and motorists – the roads are getting slick which makes it harder for vehicles to stop, so use caution.
