Grant drives Okanagan Falls company forward

OKANAGAN FALLS — If you’ve ever taken the SkyTrain in the Lower Mainland, you may be surprised to learn that a south Okanagan company has a hand in building it. Unit Electrical Engineering Limited manufactures a unique motor used in transit systems around the world. Now, the federal government is giving it a big grant so it can build a motor that’s more environmentally responsible.

The company’s CEO says he applied for the grant over a year ago and is delighted by the announcement.

“There’s a long design phase and a manufacturing phase to figure out how to manufacture this technology, and this is where it is very important for the grant money that we’ve received. It provides us with the support and resources to do that,” explains Mark Burleigh.

The Okanagan Falls business is building a prototype that aims to reduce green house gas emissions by 10 per cent and reduce the amount of electricity used by making a lighter product.
