MONCTON – You think ol’ man winter is tough? Some might say he doesn’t have anything on Larry McLaughlin.
More than once this winter, McLaughlin has climbed up and shoveled off his own roof at 82 years old.
Larry and his wife Margie have lived in the same house in Moncton for about 50 years. And neither one of them remember a winter with so much snow.
“We never had it this much before in my time that I remember,” he said.
Margie says she doesn’t mind the snow, but she’s tired of having to keep an eye out for her hubby who, like the snow, refuses to let up.
“I just almost say a prayer and say I hope he makes it down alright. But he does things like this all the time,” she said.
This winter Larry’s been going non-stop in his tractor almost every other day plowing the more than 450 centimetres that’s fallen so far this year.
“I know he’s going to do it no matter what I say, he’s going to go out and do it anyway,” she said.
“She says a lot of stuff that I tune out I am not sure I hear her at all,” Larry jokes.
But what you won’t hear from him is a single complaint about all the snow.
“Oh, they can complain if they want, it’s good Tim Hortons conversation but it’s not worth talking about.”
For Larry, the snow keeps him going.
“I know the day is coming when it’s going to hurt and I am not going to be able to accept it and I’m going to be a very bad, old age person,” he said.
“I am going give the nursing home a hard time for sure.”
Until then Margie will just have to keep watching over Larry.
