CALGARY – A Calgary father who survived a machete attack is telling his terrifying story.

Nicholas Dirven was walking his dog in the community of Coventry Hills on February 13th, when he became involved in a verbal altercation with a group of teenagers.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“Information suggests that one of the youths said something about the dog, an argument ensued, and then the offender chose that time to attack the victim,” said Detective Dan Guenette with the Calgary Police Service.

Dirven says about 12 to 15 youths surrounded him. He tried to escape into an alleyway, but one of the teens pulled out a machete and attacked him.

He was struck in the shoulder, back, head and face – and had part of his ear severed.

“I got striked [sic] across the back four or five times with the machete,” explained Dirven. “I turned to see if they still had the sheath on it or not, and as I did that, they ended up cutting off the top portion of my left ear… and then another strike across my face, cutting my mouth open.”

Dirven says he hasn’t been back to work since the attack.

Police have arrested a 17-year-old, charging him with aggravated assault, possession of a dangerous weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and two counts of breaching current conditions.

Investigators say the others in the group are cooperating with police and will not be charged.
