Both lanes of eastbound Hwy 401 reopen near Belleville after pileup

WATCH: A stretch of Hwy 401 near Belleville was a wreck of twisted metal after 50 vehicle pileup close eastbound lanes.

TORONTO – Both eastbound lanes of Highway 401 near Belleville have reopened Thursday morning following a massive multi-vehicle pileup a day earlier.

Ontario Provincial Police say the accident happened just after midnight when up to 50 vehicles were involved in a collision between County Road 40 in Trenton and Lyle Road in Grafton. Poor weather is being blamed for the crash.

Police say four people suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital as a precaution.

Officials say 40 tractor trailers were part of the crash and one of the trucks had its tanker ripped open, spilling around 40,000 litres of lubricating oil onto the shoulder and into a ditch.

The Ontario Ministry of Environment says crews were able to clean the spill.

The westbound lanes of Highway 401 were fully reopened Wednesday evening.
