REGINA – A fatal collision last Friday has sparked questions regarding how old someone should be in order to drive on 100 km/hr roads, and whether there should be barriers in the middle of Ring Road.
“There are no restrictions on the class of roads, like a residential street, versus a highway, versus a speed limit,” said Ciaran Downes, manager of Driver Development with SGI.
The crown’s Graduated Driver’s Licensing program is completed in stages. A 16-year-old with a Novice 2 license can drive with relatively few restrictions.
“Part of that is we’re looking to provide opportunities for drivers to gain experiences in these different traffic situations, which we all encounter every day, even just driving to work,” said Downes.
The Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure isn’t in charge of Ring Road.
Doug Wakabayashi, the ministry’s assistant director of communications, said provincial highways are now designed so that medians have a width of 32 metres.
“Engineering studies show that, generally, if a driver does leave the road they can bring their car under control or take some sort of corrective action within about 20 metres,” he said.
The City of Regina declined to speak to Global News for this story because the investigation into the collision is ongoing.
