VANCOUVER – A group of students from the University of British Columbia Alma Mater is showing off their talents by singing to encourage people to vote yes in the upcoming transit plebiscite.

Set to the tune of I Get Around, by The Beach Boys, the UBC A Capella group uses the song to sing of the need for more transit options to get around Vancouver and out to the campus.

“We wanted to put forward some light hearted material that reminds students to get registered and to learn more,” said Bahareh Jokar, the vice-president of External Affairs at the Alma Mater Society of UBC Vancouver. “This video is being promoted on our website for student[s], www.students4yes.ca, which provides more information on the referendum, the mayors’ council vision, and how you can get involved.”

She said the society hopes that students take the time to learn about the benefits of this plan, as they can have a huge impact on the outcome.

“This referendum will shape the future of our cities, and it will inherently make it easier for the vast majority of students who are dependent on public transportation to get to school faster and more effectively,” added Jokar. “The majority of student associations across Metro Vancouver have signed onto the Better Transit and Transportation Coalition, and collectively we represent upwards of 145,000 students across the region.”

The A Capella group will be releasing more videos shortly.
