Sean Doffe went skiing alone in the backcountry of B.C.’s southern interior and made a friend along the way.

On his first day of skiing the Northern Monashees Doffe realized he was being followed by a grouse.

He rigged a GoPro camera to his ski pole and filmed the bird following him fearlessly down the hill.

“This bird would biff it and crash it,” says Doffe. “He followed me off a jump and biffed it off the jump and tumbled and he’s right back after you.”

When they made it to the bottom, the bird faithfully turned around and followed Doffe back up the hill.

“He starts getting tired because you’re going for an hour to get back up, then you look behind you and there he is in your track…following you up all tired, just wiggling,” he says.

On day two, Doffe brought along some friends and the bird figured out how to hitch a ride by climbing on Doffe’s back.

And this is not a one-off. When Doffe returns to the mountain he calls to the bird and the grouse shows up to ski with him.
