Winter weary NBers deal with aftermath of another fierce storm

MONCTON – Winter weary New Brunswickers are dealing with the aftermath of yet another fierce storm.

The storm virtually shut down most of the province Monday as people spent the day digging out.

According to Environment Canada, Moncton received 44 centimetres of snow. Saint John recorded 36 centimetres and Gagetown saw 32 centimetres.

Moncton’s Lise Martin spent the morning shoveling her walkway, happy to see her plow coming up the street to clear several feet of snow in her driveway.

“It’s kind of a lot of snow for one winter they could spare us a little bit,” she said.

In Saint John, resident Scott Thomas said this kind of late season storm should be expected.

“It’s still the winter and this should not surprise us but it’s a sad reality,” he said.

Treacherous driving conditions continued throughout the day caused by drifting and blowing snow. Maritime Road Development Corporation recorded whiteout conditions on Route 2 where a portion between the Sussex exit and Moncton was down to one lane.

The highway between Moncton and Nova Scotia was also closed for a portion of the day and RCMP reported several vehicles were stranded along the highway.

Spring is only a few days away and Fredericton resident Tom Coshnie made the best of the weather, choosing to shovel his driveway in a tank top.

“It feels like the worst one I know it likely isn’t but it feels like it cause you know it feels like Spring,” he said.
