EDMONTON — A 16-year-old Alberta boy died in hospital Saturday after a two-vehicle collision west of Ponoka.
The crash happened on Highway 53 at Range Road 262, about seven kilometres west of Ponoka.
RCMP say the boy was driving a pickup truck that was heading east on Highway 53 when it rear-ended a flat deck truck. The flat deck had stopped on the highway to turn left onto Range Road 262, police said Sunday.
Fire rescue crews were called to the scene to help remove the teen from the pickup truck. The boy was taken to the Ponoka Hospital then airlifted by STARS Air Ambulance to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton.
Police say the Bluffton, Alberta boy died of his injuries in hospital.
The driver of the flat deck was not injured in the collision. Police do not believe alcohol or road conditions were factors in the collision.
The victim’s name is not being released.
Ponoka is located about 100 kilometres south of Edmonton.
