Vehicle windows smashed overnight in two areas of Edmonton

WATCH ABOVE: Residents in northeast Edmonton woke up to a concerning act of vandalism Saturday morning.

EDMONTON — Dozens of residents northeast of downtown and in the west end woke up to an unpleasant surprise Saturday morning – the windows of their vehicles were smashed overnight.

“I’m just so upset,” said Layla Sarmiento who lives in the Highlands area. “I come outside from my house and I look – everybody’s window was smashed. Everybody.

“What really upset me was, the glass is all over my daughter’s car seat. Even if we miss one (piece), what if she pokes her hand and hurts herself? That’s the most concerning to me. I don’t really care about the car.”

Police say more than 70 vehicles were hit in Beverly Heights, Highlands, Beacon Heights and Newton sometime between midnight at 3 a.m. The area spans from 43 Street west to 66 Street and 111 Avenue north to 122 Avenue. It’s not known what was used to smash the windows.

“This is incredibly irresponsible behaviour that has a huge impact on the community and has affected many residents,” said Cst. Nikolas Pavlov. “We are asking the suspects to turn themselves in at Northeast Division, and perhaps the consequences for their criminal activity may be less severe than if they decide to not be accountable.”

Police estimate the damage to the vehicles is in excess of $37,000.

While the attack appears to be random, area residents like Sarmiento say it’s concerning.

Saturday afternoon, police in west Edmonton said they received at least 13 reports of shattered windows from residents in the Parkview neighbourhood. Officers say no belongings were taken from any vehicles in the area.

Officers do not believe the two incidents are connected.

Police do not have any suspects in custody at this time. Anyone who may have seen suspicious activity overnight is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online.
