Woman attacked on Vancouver Island trail: Suspect caught

VANCOUVER – A woman was assaulted by a stranger on Thursday night on a trail in Colwood, on Vancouver Island. While police initially said a second woman was attacked in the same area on Friday morning, they now say it was not an attack, but a sighting.

West Shore RCMP say they have a man matching that description in custody.

The attack happened when a 21-year-old woman was walking with a suitcase Thursday night on a trail from Adye Road, through Hatley Memorial Gardens and a man approached her.

The suspect tried to talk to the victim, but when she ignored him police say he grabbed her suitcase and hit her in the face. He was last seen walking westbound on the Galloping Goose regional trail.

Police attended with a police dog but were not able to find the suspect.

He is described as a Caucasian man with a round face, heavy set, between 40 to 50 years old with bad teeth, stubble, a black baseball cap with a tattered brim, a blue jean jacket and blue jeans.

The victim was not physically injured and did not need medical attention.

Police are not connecting these incidents to an attack on a female jogger in Langford on March 3, but are investigating to see if there are any similarities.
