Students injured after school bus rolls in Saskatchewan

ELFROS, Sask. – Several students suffered minor injuries after a school bus rollover Friday in Saskatchewan. The students, who are from Wadena Elementary School, were on their way to Mission Ridge when their bus rolled around 8:30 a.m. on Highway 35 approximately one kilometre south of Elfros.

There were 19 students on board along with two chaperones and the driver. All were safely removed from the bus and were assessed at the scene by paramedics.

Most of the students, ages nine and 10, were taken to Wadena hospital for treatment or examination by medical staff.

Kevin Garinger, director of education at the Horizon School Division, said one child suffered a broken collar bone.

“It’s a traumatic experience for everyone, our children and staff included, and our parents for that matter.”

“Procedures around bus evacuations were followed to a T,” he said. “I think it’s a big reason why our children got out of there safely.

Highway 35 was closed for a short period of time and has since reopened.

Elfros is approximately 210 kilometres east of Saskatoon.
