Langley RCMP recover thousands of pieces of stolen mail; Woman charged

VANCOUVER – Langley RCMP have recovered thousands of pieces of stolen mail from a storage locker in a Langley apartment complex.

The mail was found in early February by the owner of the locker and police estimate there were between 8,000 and 10,000 pieces of mail in there.

Forensic evidence linked the mail to a 36-year-old Langley woman, Sarah Lea Arnet. She lived in the building and police were able to obtain a search warrant for her home. When officers from the General Duty and Street Enforcement Unit searched Arnet’s home last Thursday they found about another 6,000 pieces of stolen mail, identity cards, computers, cell phones and data storage devices. The mail belonged to people all over the Lower Mainland and the Interior.

Arnet remains in custody and has been charged with one count of identity theft. She appeared in court on Thursday via video. She does not have a lawyer, so she asked for proceedings to be set over to Monday. The court agreed and she will next appear on Monday, March 16.

“In collaboration with Canada Post Postal Inspectors, all police agencies continue to work collectively to tackle the problem of mail theft,” says Supt. Murray Power, officer in charge of Langley RCMP. “Excellent analytical work, information sharing and evidence recovery all contribute to a solution.  We cannot stress enough – the greatest solution to the problem is also the easiest to invoke. We need everyone to collect your mail daily.  If it is not there, it cannot be stolen. The secondary fraud related offences are even more invasive and damaging to our citizens, so diligence is crucial and appreciated here.”
