Former Winnipeg Goldeye cooks up new career

WINNIPEG — He used to make his living as a fish at the dish.

Now Amos Ramon earns it serving fish on a dish.

“I’ve never worked in a restaurant,” said the former Winnipeg Goldeye. “All my jobs have been sports related.”

Ramon has had a full plate despite having just retired from professional baseball. He and his neighbour opened Fusian Experience, a sushi restaurant, two months ago on Academy Road.

“At first I was super nervous and didn’t know what to expect,” said Ramon.

An entirely new game for the Texan turned Winnipegger.

“Playing here for so long, even when you played against them, you would feel the atmosphere when you came up to Winnipeg,” said Ramon. “That feeling of the people that embraced their community. It’s been great.”

Ramon spent four years of his nine season baseball career with the Goldeyes. He was even named the American Association’s playoff MVP during Winnipeg’s championship run in 2012. Success that silenced the skeptics.

“They said I would never play Division I baseball,” said Ramon. “I wanted to prove them wrong. Then they told me I would never play pro ball. I wanted to prove them wrong there too.”

A drive he’s delivered to his restaurant.

“If you’re willing to push yourself and work hard in what you believe in, anything can happen,” said Ramon.
