Insurance claims begin as potholes waylay Winnipeg drivers

WINNIPEG — Spring in Winnipeg means warmer weather and potholes.

Manitoba Public Insurance says so far this March it has received 12 claims for damage because of potholes.

Drivers are not necessarily at fault if they hit a pothole, MPI spokesperson Brian Smiley said.

If the driver explains to an adjuster he or she tried to avoid it, didn’t see it because it was covered with water or dark outside, or couldn’t move over, the driver only has to pay the deductible.

If the driver knew about the pothole and hit it at a high rate of speed, then he or she will be assessed five demerits.

“The large majority are found not at fault,” said Smiley.

There are more than 1,000 pothole claims a year, he said.

The city says it is still not warm enough overnight to have the full fleet of pothole patching equipment on the job. That is expected to happen later next week.

A spokesperson tells Global News right now crews are hand patching the potholes but that is only a temporary fix.

Last year the city spent $2.6 million on pothole repairs.
