Montreal’s Le Jardin Tiki closes its doors

MONTREAL — One of Montreal’s best-known restaurants is set to close at the end of the month.

Le Jardin Tiki is a Chinese buffet-style restaurant in the heart of Montreal on Sherbrooke Street East.

According to reports in the French newspaper, La Presse, it will be replaced by a retirement home.

Known for its pastiche, pop-Polynesian decor, one online reviewer said entering Le Jardin Tiki was like taking “a step back into time … the decor is like being on a Gilligan’s Island show,” while another described it as a “masterpiece of Kitsch.”

Le Jardin Tiki opened in 1986. Much of its Kitsch decor was bought in 1981 when the Kon Tiki restaurant on Peel Street closed.
