REGINA – K Family Kitchen reopened on Wednesday, about nine and a half months after a fire that destroyed part of the restaurant.
Factoring in lost profit, damage, etc., the owners said the fire cost $1 million.
“Our first thought wasn’t for ourselves, it was for our employees,” said Kouros on Saturday.
Insurance was able to provide lost wages for employees, six of whom returned to work at the restaurant.
“All of the customers that come here, they’re not even really customers,” said server Megan Hyde, who credited her relationship with customers as a major reason why she works at the restaurant. “They’re more like family.”
The owners opted for a soft opening, relying on word-of-mouth to attract diners back for now.
“Are they going to remember you?” said co-owner Robyn Kouros regarding her customers.
Memory seemed to be no problem for patrons Saturday morning as there was a full house for breakfast.
“All the familiar faces have come back,” said Kouros. “It was like the fire never happened.”
The restaurant opened in 1982.
