A man from Kimberley, B.C. who fought off a grizzly bear to save his wife’s life three years ago was awarded the Medal of Bravery by Governor General David Johnston on Friday.

Peter Moody was hiking with his wife Susan Bond near their home along Cherry Creek in November 2012 when they came across a mother grizzly and her cubs. The mother attacked Bond, striking her several times.

“The only thing I could think of doing right off the bat was to get the bear off Susan,” said Moody to Global News several months after the attack.

“I took the ski poles and started beating on the bear’s back. I did that half a dozen times, and then she turned on me.”

After hitting Moody multiple times, the mother grizzly and her cubs moved on. Moody and Bond, badly injured, walked a few hundred metres before being discovered by someone who then phoned for help.

Moody was one of 42 Canadians given the Medal of Bravery at Rideau Hall on Friday. It’s the third-highest honour for bravery in Canada, after the Cross of Valour and the Star of Courage.
